Dynamic proportions

Learn how to capture the whole figure dynamically! Proportions are a challenge for all of us, but they get easier with practice and knowledge! In this session I’ll teach you tips and techniques to help you on the pathway to mastering your anatomical proportions and capturing the dynamics of the pose.

These sessions are always warm, engaging and rewarding. I provide an encouraging environment, so if you are really sure you can’t draw, you will get a pleasant surprise!

What to bring?

Easels and drawing boards are provided. I offer A2 sized cartridge paper at cost – 25cents/sheet (not acid free). Apart from that, please bring your own paper and drawing materials. Here’s a suggested list:

  • Paper: for this session, A3 or A4 sized paper – cartridge paper, and/or craft paper (both these can be bought in single sheets or in pads), and you may want some butchers paper or similar for warm up drawings.
  • Tools and media: for this session, please bring a mix of your own preferred media. For example, a mix of pencils or graphite (e.g., 2B, 4B, 6B, 9B), conte sticks, pastels or charcoal. You may want to bring a kneadable eraser (for lifting pigment off the page) and a regular eraser. Please feel free to bring other media such as pen and ink, markers, or whatever you like to work with, except oil paints (due to workplace health and safety constraints). And…don’t feel that you have to rush out and buy a lot of new stuff, we can use what you already have.
  • A note on fixative: you may wish to bring fixative to stabilise charcoal and pastel drawings. Please note that it should never be used inside the studio for workplace health and safety reasons. If you want to use it, please spray your drawings using the table outside the building. (Fixative coats your lungs as well as your paper.)
